Chapter Seventeen

“Enough about me. I want to know more about you.” Blake nudged her while he ran hot water over their plates. They stood side by side rinsing and loading the dishwasher.

She bristled. “I don’t like talking about myself. I’m not that interesting and I don’t allow people to get personal with me.”

He grinned and dropped a kiss on the back of her neck. “Making love isn’t personal for you?”

“That’s not what I meant.” Thankfully, her cell phone rang, giving her a reprieve from Blake’s questions. The spot on her neck where he kissed her sizzled. Through their entire conversation over breakfast, she’d studied him, watching his eyes light up when he talked about his daughter and his features turn serious as he revealed more about his ex-wife and their failed marriage. He spoke without anger or the need for revenge. What pushed his buttons? What would it take to make him mad?

Clearly, his daughter was his top priority. That devotion excited her. She wanted nothing more than to drag him back into her bedroom for more of his lovemaking. Frowning at the unfamiliar number displayed on the screen, she answered the call.

The level of Lynne’s voice was so loud, Blake heard. “Noreen? Thank God I found you. I need to discuss Argia’s medical records with you. I’m going to have her father arrested and I want you to support me.”

He stood at the sink, the soapy cheese slicer clutched mid-air in his hand. He eyed Noreen. The euphoria of the last few hours evaporated.

“What? Lynne, what’re you talking about? That’s a serious accusation to make against your husband. I can’t support something like that. I won’t.”

“Once you see the facts I’ve gathered you will. Meet me and I’ll show you. Are you home? I’ll come to your apartment.”

Blake’s eyebrows shot up.

“You know where I live?”

Lynne laughed, sounding a little possessed. “Of course. There’s so much information out there on the Web, you were easy to find. I’m not far. I could be there in about twenty minutes.”

The breath caught in her throat. Lynne couldn’t find Blake here, in a T-shirt and barefoot, at home in her kitchen. And she didn’t want him to leave, especially not under these circumstances. She fell into nurse mode, straightened her spine, and leveled her voice.

“That’s unacceptable, Lynne. I worked a twelve-hour shift and I was just ready to attempt some sleep. One more minute and my phone would have been silenced. I need my rest to adequately care for my patients and yours is not an emergency. We can arrange to meet when it is mutually accommodating for both of us.”

Did Blake just release a breath he’d held? She wasn’t sure.

On the other end of the line, Lynne stuttered. “I-I’m sorry, Noreen. It’s just that I’m so concerned for my daughter. Her father brought her home last night and she wouldn’t eat and was listless. I thought she might throw up and—”

The cheese slicer clattered to the bottom of the sink and a thin line of bright red blood oozed from Blake’s palm.
